Make Summer Learning Fun-2

Summer is here! Parents often ask what kinds of activities will keep the academic learning going over the summer and help ready their child for the next school year. There are many acyivities that enhance academic skills in all children of all ages. In addition to the many outdoor activities available to students over the summer, many academic skills can be used too. Below is a short list of items that keep young students actively engaged over the summer - especially on rainy days. Summer vacation time is important family time. Additionally, you can keep learning as a daily event.

14. Add the numbers on license plates while riding in the car - enhances math skills.

15. Nature Hikes - the world around us is full of science.

16. Collect tadpoles in an aquarium and watch them turn into frogs - life cycle.

17. Go to summer concerts - even the early Greek Empire knew fine arts add
to the quality of life.

18. Be a sculptor - model clay can be used again and again and again.

19. Play chess - this teaches strategy and critical thinking skills.

20. Go to the Basketball Hall of Fame - learn the history of our great sport from MA.

21. Go for walks with the whole family - healthy habits are good for everyone.

22. Play Frisbee golf in your back yard - coordination and skill are developed.

23. Play croquet in your back yard - the whole family can have fun while building coordination and estimation.

24. Play the internet game: let your child pick a subject they like,
then ask them to get 10 "authentic" references on this subject from
the internet - this teaches them to be critical of what they collect
on the web.

25. Learn a new language - for five dollars, you can get a CD-ROM on any new language - learn words, put together phrases - you can even get the whole family involved as you name the food items each night at dinner, colors, numbers, etc.

Have a fun summer full of learning!

Sincerely,
Chris & Dan
