Club seeks members By Erin O'Connor Staff Writer WESTFIELD - Jim Curran, publicity coordinator for the World War I Club of Westfield, has a collection of artifacts in his home that tell a story of the first World War. Among these is a diary his father wrote while serving in the war. An excerpt from the diary dated April 20, 1919 by John P. Curran states: "Dear Mother and Father, Well... seeing today is easter Sunday and I am still in France but I don't think it will be long before I will be home. We were to get on the boat yesterday but a case of measles broke out so we were sent back to this camp. But if that didn't happen, we would be sailing on the high seas today. We will be here only a few weeks longer. Well... I sure would like to be in Westfield for May 30 and you can bet if I am there... there will be one big time." The club is currently seeking to increase their membership. The next meeting will be at the Westfield Senior Center on Jan. 18 at 1:30 p.m. "We are trying to keep history alive," Joyce Samel, the club president said. The World War I Club is hoping to expand membership regionally into Agawam, East Longmeadow and Russell. It currently has between 15-20 members.
